Nobody in this business likes to publish real numbers, because it makes quotes comparable and comparable quotes are harder to pad. We publish them anyway. Homeowners in metro Atlanta deserve a way to tell a fair number from an inflated one before a crew ever shows up.

Those are metro Atlanta numbers for 2026, for material ordered fresh and installed within a day or two of delivery. If a quote lands meaningfully below the bottom of those ranges, something is being left out — usually removal of old material, grading, or the sod’s actual age on the pallet.
What actually moves the price
1. Total square footage
Price per square foot drops as the job gets bigger, because delivery, mobilization and setup are largely fixed costs. A single 500 square foot spot repair often prices near the top of its range. A full-property job needing 8,000 or more square feet on the same street can land noticeably lower per foot, because the truck and crew are already there.
2. Grass type
Bermuda is the least expensive to produce and the most commonly installed turf in metro Atlanta. Centipede sits in between and is often the lowest overall cost for large low-maintenance areas, though it establishes more slowly.
3. Site access
A forklift or flatbed truck needs a clear path to get pallets near the work area. Front yards with driveway access price straight out of the price sheet. A backyard behind a locked gate, up a slope, or past a pool means every piece gets hand-carried, and that labor shows up as extra cost per square foot.
4. Removing the old lawn
If what’s there now is dead, thin, or thatched from years of neglect, it has to come out before new sod goes down — fresh turf laid over a dead layer just fails to root. Removal and haul-away runs $0.15 to $0.30 per square foot on top of the installed price, depending on how established the old grass is.
5. Grading and prep
Basic leveling and weed clearing are usually bundled into a standard install if the yard is in reasonable shape. Real prep work — regrading low spots, correcting drainage, weed-kill on an overgrown yard — is priced separately and covered on our lawn prep & grading page.
Sod Cost in Atlanta by Neighborhood
Sod cost doesn’t swing much block to block within the city itself, but it does shift once you factor in access and lot type across the metro. Intown properties in Atlanta and Decatur often have smaller, tighter yards with easier truck access from the street. North-metro communities like Roswell and Alpharetta tend toward larger properties with more total lawn area, which can bring the per-square-foot price down through volume even as the total job cost is higher. West Metro areas like Marietta and Kennesaw land close to the metro average, with the usual swings for access and existing lawn condition.
Delivery-only vs. full installation
Delivery-only sod is cheaper up front and a real option if you have the labor and the day free. The catch is timing. Pallets left sitting in a driveway start drying out and heating up internally within days — if you go delivery-only, plan to lay it within a few days of drop-off, ideally sooner in summer heat.
- What a full install typically includes: yard clearing, staggered-row laying, tight seams, rolling and cleanup of walkways and driveways.
- What it usually does not include unless you ask: old lawn removal, real grading, or irrigation repair beyond a basic check.
- Fresh material matters — sod cut the day of your job holds color and moisture better than material scooped off a pallet that has been sitting for a week.
