Choosing the right sod for an Atlanta yard
Bermuda is the default warm-season grass across metro Atlanta, and for good reason. It handles full sun, heat and drought better than the other two, spreads fast enough to fill in foot traffic and pet wear, and is the standard choice for sports lawns and open front yards. It does not tolerate shade at all, so a Bermuda lawn under a mature tree canopy will thin out no matter how well it is cared for.
Zoysia is the upgrade turf. The blade is softer and denser, the growth rate is slower, which means less mowing, and it tolerates light shade far better than Bermuda while still holding a manicured, carpet-like look. Centipede is the low-maintenance, budget-friendly choice, and it is uniquely suited to Georgia’s naturally acidic clay soil where other turf types need constant lime and fertilizer correction. It needs the least mowing and feeding of the three, but it is slower to establish, more sensitive to heavy foot traffic, and will not tolerate high-pH or compacted soil the way Bermuda and Zoysia do. What a professional sod install includes
- Site prep confirmation — grade checked, old grass or debris cleared, irrigation running before a single pallet is cut open.
- Staggered brick-pattern laying — rows offset from each other so seams do not line up and create weak channels.

Laying it so it does not gap
The staggered brick pattern is not cosmetic. Sod laid in straight, aligned rows creates continuous seam lines that dry out faster and are the first place weeds establish. Offsetting each row so no two seams line up spreads out the stress and gives every piece full-contact neighbors on more sides. We hand-press every seam and roll the finished lawn once, which forces air pockets out from under the sod. A lawn with air pockets under it dries out and browns in patches within a week, even with correct watering.
Watering new sod so it actually roots
New sod needs water twice a day for the first seven to ten days, enough to keep the top inch of soil and the sod itself consistently damp without standing water. After that first week and a half, we cut back to once daily for another week, then transition to a normal established-lawn schedule. Skip a watering cycle in the first few days during a Georgia summer and you can lose sections of sod permanently, so this is the one part of the process a homeowner has to stay on top of after we leave.
Stay off new sod except to water it for the first two weeks. Rooting starts within about ten days but is not strong enough to survive regular foot traffic or a mower pass until closer to three weeks. We give every customer a written watering schedule at handoff, not just a verbal reminder, because this is the single biggest reason a professionally installed lawn fails.
Before the sod goes down
Sod is only as good as the ground under it. If your yard has not been graded, sprayed for existing weeds or grass, or checked for irrigation coverage, get that done first through lawn prep & grading rather than skipping straight to sod. Laying new turf over old dead grass or low spots that pond water is the most common reason a sod job fails in its first month, and it is avoidable.
