The step that decides whether new sod actually takes
More new sod fails from bad ground underneath it than from bad sod. Grading and leveling
Metro Atlanta sits on Piedmont red clay, which compacts easily and drains slowly compared to sandier soils. A yard with even minor low spots will pond water after a normal Georgia thunderstorm, and standing water under new sod is one of the fastest ways to kill it before it roots. We identify low spots, high spots and any grade that pitches water toward the house instead of away from it, then correct the grade so water actually moves off the lawn instead of sitting on it.

Killing off existing grass and weeds, on a timeline
Old grass and weeds left alive under new sod compete with it for water and nutrients and often push back up through the seams within weeks. We typically apply a glyphosate-based herbicide roughly two weeks before the sod delivery date, which gives it enough time to fully kill the root system rather than just burn the visible top growth. Timing this against your install date matters — spray too late and the old grass is still alive underneath when sod goes down; spray too early and weeds can re-establish in the gap before installation.
Irrigation inspection and head coverage
New sod needs consistent water for the first two to three weeks, and a sprinkler dead zone — a clogged head, a misaligned spray pattern, a zone that simply does not reach a corner of the yard — can kill new sod in days during a Georgia summer, not weeks. Before sod goes down, we run every zone, check actual coverage against the areas being sodded, and flag any head that needs adjustment, replacement or an added zone. This is a small, cheap fix to make before installation and an expensive, dead-sod problem to discover after.
Soil amendment and starter fertilizer
Depending on what the yard needs, prep can include working in soil amendments to improve structure in heavy clay areas and applying a sod-safe starter fertilizer to support early root development once new turf goes down. We will tell you honestly if a soil test is worth doing first rather than guessing at amendments the yard does not actually need.
Available on its own, or bundled with installation
If you are booking sod through us, prep is simply the first phase of the job and folded into one estimate. If you already have a landscaper doing the actual install, or you want the yard ready weeks ahead of an install date you have already scheduled, we do prep as a fully standalone visit. Either way you get a written report on what we found and what we corrected, so whoever lays the sod is working with ground that has actually been checked, not assumed to be ready.

Once prep is done
A properly prepped yard is ready for sod the same day or shortly after weed-kill has fully taken effect.
